About Jaipur BookMark
Three years ago, the Jaipur Literature Festival began an important new initiative: Jaipur BookMark (JBM). Conceptualized as a business to business segment, JBM is held parallel to JLF, and provides a platform for publishers, literary agents, authors, translation agencies and writers to meet, talk business deals, listen to speakers from across the world and perhaps even sign the occasional contract. One of the ways in which we are trying to bring India into the international space and to encourage the buying and selling of translation rights of Indian language literature is by launching Jaipur BookMark.
India offers a rich landscape of writing and Jaipur BookMark is well placed to showcase the best of such writing and to help facilitate the sale and exchange of rights both between Indian languages and internationally.Even as India opens out as the world’s third largest English language publishing market, the complex and segmented Indian language market provides even greater publishing opportunities in Hindi, Malayalam, Bangla and Gujarati, amongst others.
In January 2016 we had delegations from the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Norway and many more. Key Indian language publishers specialising in translations also participated in the event. Jaipur BookMark 2016 also brought to the publishing and translation market a Global Rights Translation Catalogue with a select list of 8 works on offer for translation from across 6 Indian languages.
Currently, no other publishing platform in India offers the possibility of both getting to know India’s varied literatures, and making contact with publishers and authors from India’s many languages. With this initiative, we hope to begin answering the question that publishers and agents from across the world often ask: How do we get to know Indian literatures? How can we translate between Indian languages, and from Indian languages into other languages of the world?
Translation will remain our prime focus at JBM 2017. This time we will highlight the literatures of the Eastern states of India. You can look forward to meeting authors, publishers and booksellers from West Bengal, Assam, Manipur, Orissa and the East Zone. We look forward to welcoming you to Jaipur BookMark 2017!
